Date: c. 799-818; 1867-1876 (restored)
Current location: Germigny-des-Pres, Loiret, Centre, France
Description of work: It was designed as a Byzantine quincunx, but with all the apses taking the horseshoe shape favored by Islamic architects. The horseshoe shape, which also appears in the supporting arches of Germigny-les-Pres, may be traced to its Islamic sources through the fonder of the church….Although the eccentric design of Germigny-les-Pres is often viewed as anomalous, it was no more so than most of the important early medieval structures, which were one-of-a-kind inventions.
