Question by Chris Gonzalez: Who is head of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion?
Is there any leadership above an Episcopal or Anglican Bishop or Arch-Bishop? Like how the Pope is the next step above an Arch-Bishop in the Catholic Church.
Answer by Anthony D
The Archbishop of Canterbury is a figurehead, but he is not an Anglican Pope. An attempt to turn him into one was defeated at the end of the nineteenth century.
Since then the ten yearly Lambeth Conference has been an attempt to keep the different parts of the Anglican Communion singing from the same hymn sheet – not always successfully.
