St John the Baptist’s Church is the Grade I-listed parish church of Westbourne in the far southwest of West Sussex. The Hampshire border is mere yards away. It is distinguished by a tall spire which can be seen from quite a long way away. This view looks from the southwest on Westbourne Road. Taken on 15th March 2012.

Bygone Westbourne

Selection of old photographs of the village of Westbourne and surrounding areas in West Sussex and Hampshire. The surrounding areas to Westbourne included here are Aldsworth, Lumley, Emsworth and Racton. These photos were all taken in the year 1902. There are two exceptions to this. Firstly the photo of Racton church was taken 1891. I only realised this when I noticed the date on the poster outside the church advertising Antique Oak Furniture at the Emsworth Town hall on Friday, January 30th, 1891. The other exception is the photo of Ivy Cottage in Westbourne. This photo was taken sometime in the sixties.
