Geology of Church Rock in Utah?

Question by tolstoi1: Geology of Church Rock in Utah?
Along the highway, near Monument Valley, stands a remarkable “monument”, Church Rock.

I would like to know the process which could create it. It’s hard to imagine that the entire landscape around the rock was eroded, leaving an isolated rock formation.

The bottom layers appear to be man-made, as if a bricklayer set courses of reddish bricks.

Fantastic picture! It is an erosional remnant – the western US is full of them, although few are as impressive as this. In very dry climates the rock layers start to erode steeply along fractures in the earth and in many cases where there are a number of those fractures at different angles to each other the erosion will leave a block of rocks exposed with everything around it taken away.

TLC Sister Wives: Polygamist Kody Brown of Utah with 4 wives and 16 kids

Utah police investigate ‘Sister Wives’ family for bigamy Sept. 28, 2010, 11:15 AM EST SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bigamy investigation has been launched into a polygamous family starring in a reality television show, police said Tuesday. Lehi police Lt. Darren Paul has said the probe was triggered by the reality television show “Sister Wives,” which features 41-year-old advertising salesman Kody Brown and his four wives, 13 children and three stepchildren. The TLC program premiered Sunday. Brown is only legally married to Meri Paul, but also calls three other women his spouses: Janelle, Christine and Robyn. The three stepchildren are from Robyn’s previous relationship. Christine Brown declined to comment Tuesday, although the family issued a statement through TLC that it was disappointed. More: Reality TV “…When we decided to do this show, we knew there would be risks,” the family said. “But for the sake of our family, and most importantly, our kids, we felt it was a risk worth taking.” The Browns have said they hoped that the reality show’s peek into their lives would help broaden the public’s understanding of plural families. Across Utah and parts of the western US, polygamy is a legacy of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members brought the practice to Utah in 1847, but the Mormon church disavowed plural marriage in 1890 as part of a push for Utah’s statehood. Seven-Year-Old Utah Boy Makes His Getaway From Church IV

Dispatchers received reports of a child driving recklessly on Sunday morning. Weber County Sheriff’s Capt. Klint Anderson says one witness said the boy drove through a stop sign. Anderson says two deputies caught up with the boy and tried unsuccessfully to stop the Dodge Intrepid in an area about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City. The car reached 40 mph before the boy stopped in a driveway and ran inside a home. Anderson says when the boy’s father later confronted him, the boy said he didn’t want to go to church. The boy is too young to prosecute and no citations were issued, although police did urge the father to make his car keys more inaccessible to children. ——————————- Kid’s a good little driver for a seven-year-old!
