History of the Catholic Church: From the Apostolic Age to the Third Millennium

History of the Catholic Church: From the Apostolic Age to the Third Millennium

The Catholic Church is the longest-enduring institution in the world. Beginning with the first Christians and continuing in our present day, the Church has been planted in every nation on earth.

The Catholic Church claims Jesus Christ himself as her founder, and in spite of heresy from within and hostility from without, she remains in the twenty-first century the steadfast guardian of belief in his life, death, and resurrection. The teachings and redemptive works of Jesus as told in the Gospels are expressed by the Church in a coherent and consistent body of doctrine, the likes of which cannot be found in any other Christian body.

The history of the Catholic Church is long, complicated, and fascinating, and in this book it is expertly and ably told by historian James Hitchcock. As in the parable of Christ about the weeds that were sown in a field of wheat, evil and good have grown together in the Church from the start, as Hitchcock honestly records. He brings before us the many characters–some noble, some notorious–who have left an indelible mark on the Church, while never losing sight of the saints, who have given living testimony to the salvific power of Christ in every age.

This ambitious work is comprehensive in its scope and in incisive in its understanding, a valuable addition to any school or home library.

“The gap in knowledge of history and current events sadly extends to us Catholics in our grasp of the Faith and the rich history of the Church. In his ambitious new work, History of the Catholic Church from the Apostolic Age to the Third Millennium, James Hitchcock has given us an accessible tool to better our understanding…and love for the history of the Church. To love the Church, we must understand her history. As Blessed Pope John XXIII remarked, ‘History is our best teacher.’ Thank you, Dr. Hitchcock, for this timeless gift to the Church for the Year of Faith.”
– Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York

“James Hitchcock is one of the few historians alive today with the background and ability to present the two-millenium history of the Catholic Church. In this remarkable volume Hitchcock brings a lifetime of insights and research to this important subject. It is a work of erudition in which the reader will discover not only the importance of the Catholic Church in past centuries, but in our own time.”
– Thomas F. Madden, Ph.D. Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Saint Louis University

“This book, by one of the premier American Catholic historians, is clearly addressed to a broad audience. It is apologetic in the best sense, written from the point of view of a practicing Catholic, and addresses the various questions that would occur to a lay reader inevitably influenced by views found in the larger culture. The book is well written. It is not burdened down with details or many footnotes, but is attached to a strong narrative line centering on meaning. It would therefore be appropriate to study groups.”
– Glenn W. Olsen, emeritus Professor of History, University of Utah

Feel caught between the traditional church and the emerging church? Discover a third way: deep church.

C. S. Lewis used the phrase “deep church” to describe the body of believers committed to mere Christianity. Unfortunately church in our postmodern era has been marked by a certain shallowness. Emerging authors, fed up with contemporary pragmatism, have offered alternative visions for twenty-first-century Christianity. Traditionalist churches have reacted negatively, at times defensively.

Jim Belcher knows what it’s like to be part of both of these worlds. In the 1990s he was among the pioneers of what was then called Gen X ministry, hanging out with creative innovators like Rob Bell, Mark Oestreicher and Mark Driscoll. But he also has maintained ties to traditionalist circles, planting a church in the Presbyterian Church of America.

In Deep Church, Belcher brings the best insights of all sides to forge a third way between emerging and traditional. In a fair and evenhanded way, Belcher explores the proposals of such emerging church leaders as Tony Jones, Brian McLaren and Doug Pagitt. He offers measured appreciation and affirmation as well as balanced critique. Moving beyond reaction, Belcher provides constructive models from his own church planting experience and paints a picture of what this alternate, deep church looks like–a missional church committed to both tradition and culture, valuing innovation in worship, arts and community but also creeds and confessions.

If you’ve felt stuck between two extremes, you can find a home here. Plumb the depths of Christianity in a way that neither rejects our postmodern context nor capitulates to it. Instead of veering to the left or the right, go between the extremes–and go deep.

Altico Advisors Sponsors Third Annual Community Meal

Marlborough, MA (PRWEB) July 13, 2010

Altico Advisors (www.AlticoAdvisors.com) – a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner headquartered in Massachusetts – was the proud sponsor last month of the third annual community meal at Trinity Church in Northborough.

Trinity Church provides a community meal every Wednesday throughout the year. Open to anyone who wants to come by for a nutritious, hot meal, this weekly event generally attracts 45-60 people from Northborough and the surrounding communities. Each week, members of various organizations converge on the church to prepare and serve dinner. In the past, this was an annual event for Altico Advisors, but starting in 2010, the company will be serving two meals a year, one in December and one in June.

“Coming together as a team to sponsor this community meal in neighboring Northborough has been so rewarding that we’ve decided to participate twice a year,” says Rich Maloney, Altico Advisors’ CEO. “While our experience lies in the implementation and support of business management systems for mid-market companies, we enjoy challenging our ‘project management’ skills in the kitchen for a change!”

According to Marketing Director, Marcia Nita Doron, “We fed 60 people last month! But it’s not just about meal preparation. We enjoy sitting down and meeting the folks who drop in for dinner. It’s an event that we all now look forward to. Twice a year, for a few hours, we connect with the community where we work year round.”

The community meal is just one element of Altico’s broader giving program. Altico Advisors also, for example, contributes the proceeds from its year-end training class to a different worthy cause each year. And the company co-sponsors charitable events such as golf tournaments where the proceeds go to nonprofit organizations and scholarship funds.
