Do most churches tell their congregations that Christmas is just an arbitrarily picked day?

Question by Arch Stanton’s Grave: Do most churches tell their congregations that Christmas is just an arbitrarily picked day?
I know there’s no great conspiracy to hide this information, but by the same token, is it information that is voluntarily acknowledged from the pulpit? Taught in Sunday school or communion classes?

From the number of questions I’ve seen here over the years, it would seem that to many Christians, this fact comes as a shock, even though the clergy all learn this in seminary, and it’s openly written about in numerous secular and religious publications.

So why do so many parishioners still find this information such a “revelation”?

Is it wrong for a church to tell its followers to vote on certain bills and laws?

Question by Gundamjunkie: Is it wrong for a church to tell its followers to vote on certain bills and laws?
I had a conversation with a friend today about his church. The subject of gay marriage came up and I remembered back about a year or so ago when Arizona was voting on Proposition 102 (about gay rights) and I asked him if his church told them to vote “yes” on this proposition and he said they did. I found this to be completely wrong and horrible but he disagreed with me. Do you guys think this is wrong of the church to tell the people to vote a certain way?

Yes, it is wrong for them to do so and can actually be against the law. They could lose their tax exemptions for talking about politics from the pulpit like that.

I don’t know a lot about it but I’ve heard it kind of in-between Catholic and Protestant.

Here is some info about it:
