This is the oldest item in Christ Church, Philadelphia. William Penn was baptized in this font, in England. A Bishop suggested strongly to that church that Christ Church, in Philadelphia, didn’t have a baptismal font, and it would be nice if they sent the one Penn was baptized in to North America. So they did. The tour guide told us that it was in Philadelphia on a "temporary" basis.
This church building, home to arguably the most important church congregation in US history, was finished in 1744.
The red rope is to keep tourists, like us, from getting close to the font.
