Former NFL Pro Turned Pastor to Address the RNC on Character Today

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 2, 2008

Miles McPherson, a former NFL defensive back with the San Diego Chargers who is now senior pastor of The Rock Church, one of the largest and fastest growing churches in the United States, has been asked to address the Republican National Convention Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, on “Character: Doing the Right Thing When No One Is Looking.”

McPherson, 48, is known for encouraging people of faith to “DO Something” for God. In 2000 McPherson founded the Rock Church, San Diego County’s largest Christian congregation. It draws an average of 10,000 worshipers each Sunday.

“This is an honor and a rare opportunity to serve my country,” said McPherson, who was introduced to the Republican National Convention organizers by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church. “I believe God has given me a message of encouragement and conviction to call people to righteousness, no matter what their political affiliation.”

McPherson added that speaking at the RNC should not be interpreted as partisan. “I have not been asked to nor will I endorse anyone or anything but a godly character,” he said.

McPherson’s professional football career ran from 1982 to 1985. After committing his life to Jesus Christ, he was freed of an addiction to cocaine and worked for many years as an inspirational speaker and youth pastor prior to founding the Rock Church.

He also founded Miles Ahead, an outreach organization through which he has spoken to millions at crusades, conferences, and church gatherings from Canada to Africa. Miles Ahead and nearly 300 volunteers spent 10 days in Jamaica in April and May, bringing to that Caribbean country more than million in medical services, equipment and products.

The Rock Church, known for its multicultural and innovative worship and community service, just celebrated one year in a new home at San Diego’s former naval training center. Its refurbished 210,000-square-foot complex features a high-tech sanctuary that seats 3,500; an accredited K-12 Rock Academy; a full-service book store; and other modern additions. Rock volunteers participate in more than 4,000 volunteer positions, supporting 60 ministries, from drug recovery to martial arts, from working with the homeless to providing home repair.

McPherson said speaking at the RNC should not be interpreted as partisan. “I have not been asked to nor will I endorse anyone or anything but a godly character,” he said.

Besides being an author of six books, McPherson also is an Emmy Award winning producer for the documentary Master Meth, which examines the abuse of crystal methamphetamine.

He has been married to Debbie McPherson for 24 years. They have three children and live in San Diego.
