There are twenty eight misericords at Ludlow, one of the largest collections in any parish church. Much of the carving apparently dates from the first half of the fifteenth century.

The design is thought to represent January or February, when the countryman could sit at home before the fire and live off his stores carefully laid up for Winter. Similar scenes occur in other misericords as a series depicting activities associated with the seasons.

The carving shows in excellent detail the siiter’s warm woollen costume, his round-backed chair, the fitches of bacon hanging in the larder and the pot bubbling over the fire.
