Beginning with the simple adobe structure of San Jose de Gracia in the mountain village of Las Trampas and ending with Santa Fe’s grand stone cathedral, host and filmmaker Schuyler Sackett leads viewers on a tour of Spanish Catholicism’s relationship with early New Mexico. These structures from the mid-1700s are well-preserved, with original art and stained glass, it makes for an enchanting visual tour. Meanwhile, Sackett explains the difficult relationship between the conquering Spaniards, their close-minded, but well- meaning friars, and the natives whose land had been taken and whose customs were at stake. Paintings and pueblo ruins illustrate the toll these clashes took, culminating in the Great Pueblo Uprising of 1680. Among the 45-minute tape’s highlights: the U.S.’s oldest statue of Mary and the adobe church San Francisco de Assis in Rancho de Taos, made famous by both Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. –Kimberly Heinrichs
