Question by LatinoHeat™: Fellow Catholics: Is Peter the rock or the rock mass of the Church?
I ask because I’m thinking back on one of the things my catechist said while I was in the RCIA program. He said that although Jesus says that you are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my church he then (my catechist) then goes on to say that Peter is the rock mass while Jesus is the rock and head of the Church and that when Jesus said that to Simon that he (Peter) in turn became the first Pope. Now which is right and which is wrong?
Answer by Schnapper
When Jesus said that to Peter, he was actually deriding him. In the parable of the sower in Mark’s Gospel, Peter is the stony ground, where the seeds begin flourishing, then quickly wither in the hot sun. Mark depicts Peter as a moron, who never “gets” the message of Jesus. The bit about “and upon this rock I shall built my church” is backfilled mythology. Jesus never had any notion of building a “church” (what would that word have meant to him?) in his lifetime.
So both your statements are wrong.
