Women on Church Search Committee’s?

Question by Danielle H: Women on Church Search Committee’s?
We were setting up a search committee for our church pastor and there were women who people put up to be considered for the search committee. None of them made it to say the least but that’s not why I’m asking this. On the way out of the church my mother-in-law said that if any woman had made it onto the search committee she would have left the church. When I asked why she got really defensive and all she said was that the bible said women weren’t supposed to do it only men.
So where in the bible does it say that and why would it be a problem for a woman to do it?

There is a line in Corinthians about women being silent in church. There used to be a guy who posted it here every 12 minutes, until his meds kicked in, and asked lady ministers why they went against the word of God.

By extension, if someone believes that, he/she may believe women should keep quiet on church committees, too. I found it:

1 Corinthians 14:34-36
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

(Sarcasm and dialect coming up)
Yup. Keep yore mouth shut, make sure them pews get dusted and they’s plenty of coffee for refreshments. Some muffins, too; it will keep your hands busy while us men folk decide ‘portant matters, you empty-headed fluffy little dears.
(End sarcasm and dialect.)

If you want to switch churches, I’d understand. I’d also understand if the women there decided they didn’t want to serve on other committees; let the men write the newsletter, teach the Sunday school and tend to the roses.
