How to sing church music with a little more edge or soul?

Question by Chelsea: How to sing church music with a little more edge or soul?
I have a solo and it isn’t soulful at all it is a lullaby and I’m tired of everyone singing the same I want my solo to be a little different but I don’t know how because… it’s a lullaby. I just want my song to sound a little different. Any suggestions?

Does it have two or more verses?
In this case, you may want to sing the first one, then let the piano play the intro part again, and then sing your second verse.

Think of the words. There have to be measures that you can sing a bit louder than the rest, or faster, or slower to really interpret the lullaby.

Perhaps on one verse, you could let the piano take over the melody as you either sing a descant (that any good musician can create) or by singing the alto part.

What if you added a flute in part of it? you can sing the alto as the flute does the melody. Or the flute can do a descant as you sing the melody.

Happy singing.
