Holy Rosary Church ? the Portuguese Church of Calvary in Bangkok
Thailand is primarily a Buddhist country, with a fraction of inhabitants from other religions such as Islam, Christianity and Confucianism harmoniously coexisting.
The first Catholic Church was built in 1567 by the Portuguese seafarers in Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand. After the fall of the capital, King Taksin bestowed a land at Kudi Jeen of Thonburi District where Portuguese built another church, which is known today as Wat Kudi Jeen. Sixty five years later the old wooden Kudi Jeen Church was restored and renamed as Santa Cruz Church (also known as Holy Cross Church).
And with the advent and domination of French missionaries, the Portuguese were compelled to move to Samphanthawong (the Chinatown of Bangkok) and on the banks of the Chao Phraya River they built a new church by the name Holy Rosary Church in 1768.
Holy Rosary Church is popularly known as the Kalawar Church among its inhabitants, derived from the Thai term Kalawario referring to the Calvary where Jesus Christ was crucified. The site at which the church stands is a land granted by the King Rama I.
The Holy Rosary Church that stands today has been renovated during 1891 – 1898 adding the Neo-Gothic style and towering spires to its exterior along with the shades of cream tones. The church also houses an elegant Virgin Mary statue. Its interior was adorned with Romanesque stained glass windows completed with a gilded stucco ceiling. The stained glass mosaic patterns portray the tales from Old and New Testament and are well preserved to date.
The church is located close to the high end shopping complex – River City which rests towards the south of the Holy Rosary Church. River City shopping complex accommodates shops showcasing an impressive collection of antiques as well as arts and crafts, riverside food outlets in addition to riverside auction house among others.
