One of the great rants by Christopher Hitchens was when he participated in a debate in England put on by the Intelligence Squared organization in October 2009. The subject being debated was: The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. His opponents were a Catholic bishop from Africa (Archbishop John Onaiyekan) and Catholic MP Ann Widdecombe. Supporting him was Stephen Fry. In fact, this rant has been called his best ever on the subject of the Catholic Church. A version of this video has already been posted on You-Tube, but this video focuses on just this rant by Hitchens.

There are so many things wrong with the Catholic Church.

His entire case against the Catholic Church is that in the span of its 2,000 year history, with the billions upon billions of members that its had… sins were committed. That proves nothing. The Church is its teachings, based on Scripture, not the members who disobey them. Atheists can scoff and laugh at the sins of the Church’s members, past and present, but that only shows ignorance and pride, not intelligence.

If Christianity is true, I feel sorry for St. Peter for having to put up with this kind of beratement. Actually, after seeing anyone who comes up against the eloquent and veracious Christopher Hitchens, I feel sorry for ANYONE who comes up against him. I really miss this guy. There should be more like him.

hey Conka, “the biggest charitable organization in the world.” Of course the Catholic church is like the serial killer that tries to cover its victims with as much dirt as possible. He still killed alot of people, including all those young naive men that were “blessed” into war and the civilian casualties. The dirt is the charitable works, only their deeds have been exposed. Yes the Catholic Church is tops when it comes to bloodshed, contrary to the one they profess to follow. The Christ.

such a mistake to equate the Bibles religion, as Hitchens it seems has done with modern day worshipers who are so far removed from the word of God, twisting it to please themselves, but not all. Its like a person who sees a mafia kingpin coming out of church and saying he must be a good person. Both false religion and crooks are evil. So many people don’t get it and they misrepresent both God and his word and his true worshippers and like in the ancient past it will be called to account.

1classx hey, most everyone that searches for the truth knew this long before Hitchens. His audience is just the one who hears what he says out loud that alot of people knew already. He’s not an original though it was good to hear someone remind people of what the Catholic Church has done. People shouldn’t forget that.

Pretty good description of the Catholic Churches sins and they are many but listening to his other lectures, even in part, he doesn’t make sense all of the time except to those who want to believe him. Another type of sect. For some its hard to stop talking when you have so many that want to hear what else you have to say when you should stop while your ahead.

If you go down and select all of the Catholic organizations the amount is astounding. Adding up just Catholic Charities, Food for the Poor, Catholic Relief Services, St. Jude’s, and America’s Second Harvest alone over 6 BILLION which is greater than #1 on the list for America.

Hitches greatest strength was to string together an enormous amount of lies as to be impossible to defend it all. On which lie do I pick? How about the holocaust. The pope spoke strongly against Hitler and Hitler called for the death of the pope. The Vatican sneaked out almost one million Jews out of Europe.

no doubt… it’s almost simply not fair when anyone tries debating him. with such a breadth of general knowledge, his uncanny ability to instantly cite from a plethora of sources, facts, and anecdotes, combined with a peerless sharpness of wit, intellect, and articulation, pretty much anyone with any pretense of winning an argument with hitchens will quickly, and inevitably, find themselves on the losing end of that battle every time
