When the hatemongers from Westboro Baptist Church announced they were coming to Charleston, W.Va., to do their usual ‘God Hates Figs’ bit (I decline to give them what they want – which is to use the media to propagate their own version of that line), Covenant House gathered a host of area folk for a flashy response. This is a video of a flash mob rehearsal in the Covenant House parking lot, set to a techno version of ‘Country Roads.’ Note the final long, continuous take, ending in the pigeons checking out what was going on down there on the lot. Many people don’t realize how intoxicating cults can be. If you are raised since childhood with hate and disdain, your mind may be clouded forever. Do not hate the Westboro Baptist church back, for that will only result in the cycle of hatred that will never end. Want to end it? Comfort the people who leave, let the young members know they have somewhere to go if they leave. Show them the way with peace and love.
