Failsworth Pole then and now

Failsworth Pole then and now

This was as near as I could get to the original viewpoint. The Pole area has recently been renovated and a statue of Ben Brierley has been added. (Not visible in the current snap). I reckon the old pic hails from the late 50s or early 60s.

The advertising hoardings have adverts for Park Drive cigarettes and holidays on the Isle of Man.

The first Pole was erected on January 1st 1793 by the Church and King Party and its intention was to overawe the Jacobites. I bet it put the fear of God in ’em. "Oh my God! A Pole! Run for your lives!"
